The
Power of an Idea and an Email
If ever
there was a testament to the power of the internet and to the ability
of people to share a good idea when they find it, HighTech Women is
it. An email was sent out to some friends and colleagues on a Sunday
night in early March 2000, and by the following Wednesday the HighTech
Women site had hundreds of hits and almost 100 people registered for
our first event and it has grown by word of mouth and mail ever since!
Celebrating our first anniversary, we have more than 1700 members from
around the world and 4 times that in casual unregistered visitors who
read the articles and keep up with our activities.

Who we are
HighTech Women is about meeting and mentoring.
It is both inspirational and aspirational.
HighTech Women is geared towards bringing together women in a congenial
community to meet people involved in the technology industry. It is also
an environment where experienced women reach out to those just coming
up in high-tech and related fields and give them a helping hand. The object
of HighTech Women is to mentor, encourage, teach, and share, facilitating
the advancement of women in technology and technology related fields.
In all, it is an opportunity for women to help one another foster their
ambitions and support their dreams.
It is important to note that this is not just a group for women working
in pure technology, but also for women in any tech-related sector or doing
tech-related work, including journalism, law, venture capital, consulting,
accounting, recruitment, etc., and for women in all parts of technology
organisations, including finance, marketing, sales, human resources -
at any point in their career, from the most junior to the most senior.
Started
in March 2000, HighTech Women has grown quickly to more than 1400 registered
members and more than four times that visit the site on a regular basis.
HighTech Women has been written about in the press, including the Wall
Street Journal, the Guardian, and Management Today Magazine, Tornado-Insider,
and was “Web Site of the Week” in Personnel Today Magazine. To read some
of our press coverage click here.
What
we do today
360*/What's
it all about
Generally held on the first
Wednesday of every month, the purpose of these meetings is to pick a topic
and look at it from a 360º perspective. Rather than being lectured at,
the panel is there to facilitate what always proves to be a lively
discussion and debate about all aspects of the topic.
Past
event topics have been Globalisation, Branding, New Generation Telecoms, Building
Corporate Boards,
Public Relations, Human Resources, Building a Robust Company, Financing
a HighTech Company, Marketing, Convergence, and Partnering in HighTech
Roundtables
We
conduct a number of specialised roundtable events. This is an intimate
gathering of people in a similar profession, job, or common interest to
come together to talk about their work, share ideas and skills, and
generally meet and mentor.
In
Summer 2000 we held the first CEO Roundtable and Financier's
Roundtable.
In
the works: HR, telecoms, biotech, public relations, technology,
CFO/controllers, law, and others. If any of our members or sponsors have
ideas for roundtables, or are interested in organising a round table, we
are completely open to their thoughts and efforts.
Casual
gatherings
We
have informal social gatherings including dinners, lunches, and social
events. Our 5 June event, an exclusive premier screening of the 20th
Century Fox film, When the Sky Falls, is a perfect example, as was
our 6 December Holiday Party and pantomime.

Pool
of Directors
Capable
mentors, advisors and non-executive directors are fundamental to the
success of any business, be it a start-up or a mature public
company.
Building
a strong diverse board of directors with experienced and knowledgeable
non-executive directors is key to the success of any company. By the same
token, creating such a board can be very challenging. To that end HighTech
Women has created the HighTech Women Pool of Directors, an opportunity
for highly skilled and experienced women to submit their details and for
companies to access the names and details of women who
are qualified and capable of sitting on their boards. To

Skills
Bank for Society
As part of the HighTech Women theme of “doing good and doing well”,
the HighTech Women Skills Bank for Society is an exciting new initiative
that will be launched in late-February 2001. It encompasses our mentoring
programme, school/university outreach programme, including work shadowing
projects and internships, as well as an exciting new opportunity for HighTech
Women members to donate skills to non-profit organisations. To
