Charities boost women's skill base
By Rachel Fielding, Computing

Women's networking group HighTech Women is calling on its members to combine their altruistic inclinations with the chance to enhance their CVs.
The group for female business professionals has launched a Skills Bank for Society to allow members to devote time and skills to business projects within non-profit-making and charitable organisations.

As well as giving something to society, the scheme offers an opportunity for women to put their business and technical skills to good practice. It also adds live-project experience to their CVs.

"It's a great opportunity to expand capabilities and develop new skills," said Lucy Marcus, founder and managing director of HighTech Women.

Any non-profit organisation is potentially eligible for help through the initiative. "The landscape is very competitive and these organisations need facilities, such as web technology and the ability to set up their own websites," said Marcus.

"If you get involved in a project where there's a tangible result, it's a very good way to boost your CV," said Simon Crockett, operations director of recruitment specialist Michael Page Technology. "This is one way of getting a foot in the door with a new skill."
