Women in European New Media and IT- live online debate

Date: May 16, 2001
Place: ONLINE!

The BT Ignite Communications Programme is holding a number of events focused on women and new media.

The first live online debate is on 16 May, featuring a panel of women who between them have experience of working in new media in the US, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and the Georgian Republic.

  • Lucy Marcus, founder and managing director of HighTech Women, an online and offline mentoring and meeting place for women in technology
  • Karen Mahony is the founder and director of Xymbio, a specialist digital media company
  • Antje Roestenburg is a senior interaction designer for Nortel Networks UK
  • Magali Sauderais is an interactive developer for Forma Communication.

The debate will focus on these areas:

Don't treat me like a woman
Do women want their gender to be irrelevant in the workplace? Or should women's issues have a higher profile in the workplace in order to overcome outdated corporate attitudes? How do women's experiences vary across different European countries?

Why don't more women want to work in IT?
Why is it such a struggle to encourage women to work in IT? How does this picture alter across Europe, and why are there so many more female engineers in the former Eastern bloc?

An end to boys' toys?
Is new media still the preserve of 'boys with toys', or is the industry growing up following its initial laddish phase? Do female information architects have a better focus on end users or is this unhelpful 'women-as-gentler-sex' propaganda?

Listen to the debate

14:00 - 15:00 [BST] 15:00 - 16:00 [CET] 09:00 - 10:00 [EST]
The panel will be facilitated by a professional broadcast journalist, Robert Coren. There will be a 5 minute introduction, and each theme will comprise a 15 minute discussion with 3 minute introductions to each programme section.

Take part in the e-mail forum

We'd love to hear your views on this subject, so please take the opportunity to participate in the debate. You'll be able to post questions during the broadcast in the 'Events' area.

The panelists will have an opportunity to discuss some of these questions live until @15:30 [16:30 CET, 10:30 EST].
